Descendants of William Tanner

William Tanner was born 1660 in England, and died in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. He married (1) Hannah Tibbetts, daughter of Henry Tibbetts and Sara Stanton. She was born 1664 in Kingstown, Rhode Island, and died in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. He married (2) Mary Babcock. He married (3) Elizabeth Cottrill.

The earliest record found was when a William Tanner witnessed a deed in May 1682 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. It’s believed that he emigrated from western England or Wales, some conjecture Swansea as this is where most of the English Baptists were from and the Tanners were ‘good Baptists.”

William Tanner was born 1876 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island and died 1757 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He married (1) Hannah Palmer. She was born 1691 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and died in 1729 in Washington, Rhode Island. He married (2) Elizabeth Reynolds.

William moved from South Kingstown to North Kingstown when he inherited land from his maternal grandfather, Henry Tibbetts. He was admitted as a freeman in 1723/4. He was a member of the North Kingstown town council 1746-1752.

His will was proved 13 Jun 1757.

William Tanner was born 22 Sep 1712 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and died in Stephentown, New York. He married Deliverance Briggs in Exeter, Rhode Island, daughter of John Briggs and Sarah Reynolds. She was born 1725 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and died 30 Jun 1778 in Stephentown, New York.

William was admitted freeman in 1734 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. In 1744 and 1745 he was an ensign in the North Kingstown Company. In 1747 he bought land in Exeter, Rhode Island. In 1757 he was a captain in the Exeter Company.

In 1771 he sold his land in Exeter and moved his family to Stephentown, New York. He was a blacksmith and a farmer.

William married three times. His first wife was Martha Hill whom he married in 1733/4. His second wife was Ann Sweet, and his third wife was Deliverance Briggs. There is record of 14 children.

Abel Tanner was born 22 Jun 1762, Exeter, Rhode Island and died 02 Jun 1830, Stephentown, New York. He married Lydia Sweet, daughter of Amos Sweet and Elizabeth Straight about 1782, Stephentown, NY. She was born 25 Jan 1764, East Greenwich, Rhode Island and died 07 Mar 1842 in Stephentown.

Abel was a Revolutionary soldier (at the age of 14!) Abel was a blacksmith – a very large man.
