Stephentown’s Carpenter Cemetery

The Carpenter Cemetery is one of the many family cemeteries that can be found in and around Stephentown. This cemetery was used from 1776-1906. There are 60 people buried in this burying ground. I have never been there, so I don’t know what the present condition of it is. Possibly someone will visit, and take pictures and let us know how it being kept up.

This is a transcription, taken from the Rensselaer County Cemetery Records, which was put together by Don and Clare Ratz of Cemetery Sleuths. Their work, which can be found at Rensselaer County Cemetery Records. The database includes cemeteries from all over Rensselaer County, and has more than 93,000 names. If you find dates or names that differ from your own records, please go to the Renssealer County site and report the differences. They have the ability to make the changes on the main database. Let me know as well, so that I can change what is found here.

The Carpenter Cemetery is located in Stephentown as follows: .4 mile south from Provost Road on Route 22. It is to the left and about 150’ from the road. Has an iron fence surrounding it.

I have included epitaphs for some of these folks. They come from “Epitaphs In The Only Stephentown On Earth”, by Elizabeth W. McClave. I believe that this book is still available from the Stephentown Historical Society. It is reasonably priced and a valuable resource.

Among those buried here are:

Hello,

I can help with the above thanks to Rev. War pension records. The Crandall genealogy has the wrong information and I submitted the following to the Crandall Family Assoc. many years ago and they published it in their newsletter.

Below is the family of Jasper Crandall, son of Ebenezer & Thankful (VILATE aka Willett) Crandall.

Sarah Carpenter was the daughter of Joseph & Sarah (Greenman) Carpenter. I have no idea where the name "Douglas" came from but it has to be a typo. This is the inscription: "In memory of Sarah, wife of Jasper Crandal, and dau. of Joseph & Sarah Carpenter, who d. Sept. 21, 1796 in the 30th year of her age."

Regards,
Susan Irish Nahas
